🧂 Ingredients

  • 8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup (245g) canned pumpkin puree, not pie filling
  • 3/4 cup (75g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 6 oz (170g) sharp cheddar, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 sheet (about 4 oz/115g) refrigerated pie crust
  • 1 can (6 oz/170g) large black olives, drained
  • 2 oz (55g) thin pretzel sticks
  • 8 oz (225g) dark chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup (60g) creamy peanut butter

📋 Instructions

  1. 1Whip the pumpkin dip — Beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar on medium for 2 minutes until glossy, then fold in the pumpkin and spice. Taste it; it should be creamy with a warm cinnamon hum, not flat.
  2. 2Chill until set — Scrape the dip into a bowl and refrigerate 20 minutes so it holds a peak on a pretzel. Cold dip clings; warm dip drips down your wrist.
  3. 3Build the mummy bites — Heat the oven to 375F (190C). Cut pie crust into 1/4-inch strips, wrap each cheddar cube loosely leaving a gap for the eyes, and bake 12 to 15 minutes until the pastry is golden brown at the edges.
  4. 4Make the olive eyeballs — Pat olives dry, pipe or spoon a small dab of cream cheese into each hollow, and press a tiny piece of black olive or a caper in the center. Dry olives are the secret; wet ones shed the cream cheese.
  5. 5Assemble the broomsticks — Snip the ends of pretzel sticks into a fan, then press a small triangle of cheese or a dab of peanut butter at the base to hold the bristles. They should look ragged and witchy, not neat.
  6. 6Melt the chocolate — Microwave the chocolate chips in 20-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth at about 100F (38C). Overheated chocolate turns grainy, so stop while a few lumps remain and stir them out.
  7. 7Swirl and chill the bark — Spread the chocolate 1/4 inch thick on parchment, dot with peanut butter, drag a skewer through it, and freeze 15 minutes until it snaps cleanly when tapped.
  8. 8Break and plate — Crack the bark into shards, arrange everything on one big board, and serve the dip in the middle. Taste as you go, then taste again.
👨‍🍳 Chef's Note: This is a spread, so the times and nutrition below reflect one serving of the pumpkin dip with a few mummy bites and olives, not the whole board.
